Biography

My name is Kazuo Sunaga and I began my post as Consul General of Japan in Atlanta on May 28. I look forward to working with all of you. In my previous post as Director General for International Affairs in the Bureau of Defense Policy of the Ministry of Defense of Japan, I was in charge of defense and security policy dialogues. Prior to that position I worked in the International Cooperation Bureau for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. My experience in the United States includes my post as Minister in the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in New York from 2003 to 2007. This is my first time working in the American South, as well as my first time holding the post of Consul General. I am eager to adjust to my new job and life in Atlanta so that I may best serve the people of the Southeast United States.

An exceedingly large number of Japanese citizens and Japanese companies have made their new homes in our five-state jurisdiction of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. I believe that supporting these people and companies is one of the most important aspects of my job. In addition, I hope to contribute further to the strong bonds that Japan has with these five states. I am looking forward to sharing information and ideas with all of you, both Japanese and American.
